Transplant to increase survival rates for young kidney patients, Canada
More young people in Canada diagnosed with kidney failure who survive, and one key explanation is an increase in the use of renal transplantation in young patients. This result comes from the Canadian Institutes for Health Information (CIHI) Treatment of end-stage failure of organ in Canada, from 1996 to 2005 (Annual Report 2007), a new report that includes for the first time, a chapter on pediatric patients aged 19 and with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) under-diagnosed. While the number of young Canadians newly diagnosed with end stage renal disease has remained relatively stable each year since 1981-2005 (out of 66, high 103), survival rates have improved significantly since 1981, mainly due to a kidney transplant in younger patients.The number of young people with ESRD
increased by 169% in 1981-2005 (550).The diagnosis of renal failure in early life can have serious consequences for life, says Margaret Keresteci, Director of Clinical Registries CIHI. The good news is that children with kidney failure live longer, because the graft has become the treatment of choice for these patients. The vast majority of young patients with renal failure who live with a kidney transplant, with the growing number of just above 44% in 1981 to 77% in 2005. However, during this period, the proportion of children treated with dialysis decreased from 56% in 1981 to 22% in 2005.For patients treated in the decade 1991-2000, five-year survival rates for young patients with ESRD living with a kidney transplant were considerably higher (96%) than those of dialysis
