Expert on stem cell moves in the UK
The University has attracted another British scientist, international summits of stem cells for the region. Karim Nayernia, who moves from Germany to the post of Professor of Stem Cell Biology at the University of Newcastle, is doing pioneering work that has the potential to lead to future therapies for a variety of diseases such as heart disease, Alzheimers Parkinsons disease and male infertility. The opportunity to work with world-renowned scientists of the stem cells at the Universities of Durham and Newcastle as well as medical hospitals in the attraction regions was crucial.He will be based at the International Centre for Life in a new suite of multi-million pound facilities for stem cell research, funded by regional development agency, a north-east. the potential to develop into any type of tissue in the body and can therefore be used to develop a wide range of medical therapies. Professor Nayernia joined the Georg-August University of Gttingen, Germany. There has been a part of a team that was the first in the world to isolate a new type of stem cells from adult mouse testes (male sex glands), called spermatagonial stem cells.The team published their results in top international scientific journals, Nature, in April. It been able to demonstrate that some of these stem cells, called multipotent adult stem cells of the germline (maGSCs) were converted into heart cells, muscle, brain and others. Nayernia and his team proposed that similar cells could be extracted from men using a simple testicular biopsy. Based on these
cells, the new stem cell techniques could be developed for the treatment of a variety of diseases. Therefore, the spermatogonial stem cells that would result from a male patient, cultivated in a test tube and re-transplanted in the same patient to replace damaged tissues.A danger of rejection of new tissue would not exist, because the stem cells would be genetically identical to the patient.
